Since elementary school, my strongest subject has always been mathematics. Transitioning into high school, math was a subject I found intriguing, since I was able to solve many things using simple equations. In high school, I decided to challenge myself and continue taking math courses, even if they weren’t required. My senior year of high school, I decided to take the most challenging course at my school, being Calculus BC. Having taken this course, as well as statistics my senior year, I was able to use my knowledge to further understand the calculations needed in biology, like exponential growth and standard deviation. Taking these courses has helped me at my university, given that I did not only have knowledge that helped me in Chem 1A, but I learned to ask questions, and find different ways of solving one problem. If I hadn’t taken as many math courses, I believe I wouldn’t have been as successful my first year at a university. This is because AP Calculus and AP Statistics both were college level courses, meaning I had an idea of what classes would be like and what pace they would have. My advice to high school students is even if you struggle in mathematics, it is a subject that will help you in college and even in work areas. There is plenty of resources to further understand the subject, it isn’t something that will go away, since growing up, you will have to learn to manage money, manage the amount of water you use, to save water or lower your bills. Math can be an incredible subject if you put time and effort into learning it.
