Andy Ross, born in Scotland in 1943, was taught the bagpipes by Pipe Major Donald MacDonald, Inverness, as a 9 year old. One year later he played in his first band: the Army Cadet Force. Subsequently, Andy became a member of the Dingwall Royal British Legion Pipe Band which was Grade 3 and Grade 2 Champion of Champions and advanced to Grade 1 standing in the early 1970’s. In 1975, he was a founder and Pipe Major of the Inverness and District Pipe Band.
Andy emigrated from Scotland to the United States in 1980 with his wife and three children. In 1996 he and his son, Andrew, were members of the Los Angeles Scots Pipe Band. They both were members of the L.A. Scots Pipe Band in 1997 when the band won the R.S.P.B.A. Grade 2 World Championship in Glasgow. Andy was a fine reed maker who passed away in 2013.
